Former college and professional football player Al Golden serves as the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes football team in the NCAA. Golden was named the coach of the Hurricanes on Monday, December 13, 2010, replacing Randy Shannon. Prior to coaching the Miami Hurricanes, Golden served as a head coach at Temple University, a defensive coordinator at the University of Virginia and held several other lower-level coaching positions at other colleges. Coaching Career
After his playing career ended, Golden took his first coaching position in 1993 on the high school level by serving as an offensive coordinator at Red Bank Catholic High School in New Jersey. Building off of his work with linebackers and special teams at Virginia, Golden moved to Boston College in 1997 as their linebackers coach. After a one-year stay as a linebackers coach for the Penn State Nittany Lions football team working under head coach Joe Paterno in 2000, Golden returned to the University of Virginia in 2001. He spent five seasons as the defensive coordinator for the team, before he was offered the head coaching position with the Temple Owls football team after the 2005 season. Golden led the Owls to a 27-34 record, which included back-to-back winning seasons in 2009 and 2010 and an invitation to play in the 2009 EagleBank Bowl. After news broke that the University of Miami, Florida, football team had hired Al Golden as their head coach, ESPN profiled the coach and his career throughout the years. The commentator states that Golden previously worked at Temple University, took over a 1-11 team and helped them reach a bowl game within three years, their first since 1979.
