Al-Anon is a fellowship for the family and friends of alcoholics. It includes Alateen, a fellowship for younger members that have been affected by someone's drinking. Wives and close relatives of Alcoholics Anonymous members realized that in order to solve their personal problems they needed to practice the same principles practiced by the members of Alcoholics Anonymous. While they had been meeting since the beginning of AA, they officially organized and choose the name Al-Anon in 1951. The recovery program is based on the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. The only membership requirement is that one has been affected by someone else's drinking. Today Al-Anon has over 24,000 groups and Alateen has nearly 1,800 groups. These groups are located in over 131 countries.
