Akeelah And The Bee follows Akeelah Anderson, an 11-year-old girl from the inner city, who is coached and encouraged to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Director Doug Atchison came up with the idea after watching the 1994 spelling bee and based the film on his own experience of teaching lower-income students in south Los Angeles. Akeelah And The Bee was promoted by Starbucks Entertainment and sold the DVD in its stores upon its release.
Critical Reception
Akeelah and the Bee was warmly received by most critics. Roger Ebert gave the film four stars in his original review and calls Atchison's plot construction "ingenious." The film won four Black Movie Awards and two Image Awards. Actress Keke Palmer became the youngest person to win Outstanding Actress at the Image Awards.
