Amnesty International reported that 13-year-old Aisha Ibrahim Duhulow was stoned to death for adultery in Kismayo, Somalia, after her father informed Islamic militants who control the city that three men had raped her. Eyewitnesses said that militiamen opened fire on observers who tried to save the girl, killing another child. The militia, known as "Al-Shabab," apologized for the death of the child, and said that the responsible will be punished.Amnesty International: Child of 13 stoned to death in Somalia (October 31, 2008)
Human Rights Abuse
According to Amnesty International, the Al-Shabab militia created a reign of terror in Kismayo and other parts of Somalia, threatening with death any government and media dissent. Amnesty advocates for the abolishment of stoning, saying it is a horrific punishment that severely discriminates women.Amnesty International: Child of 13 stoned to death in Somalia (October 31, 2008)
