An airport is an area specifically built for airplanes to land, take off, load and unload, etc. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/airport The airlines that use these airports may be from within the country or state of origin as well as international. Most airlines have specific airports they are based in these they call their HUB, for instance Detroit Metropolitan Airport also known as DTW is one of the hub cities for Northwest Airlines.http://www.faqs.org/faqs/travel/air/handbook/part2/section-13.html Many airports offer much more then just flights in and out things like bars, restaurants, shopping, coffee houses and fast food joints to name a few. However; with airport security being tight it can be hard for someone to get to these extras if they are not a ticketed passenger.
Cleveland Hopkins International Airport put into operation July 1, 1925 was the first airport in the United States. It was also the first airport to hold the National Air Races, in 1929. The airport was also the first to have a control tower that started operating in 1930. By 1935 there were twenty control towers throughout the U.S. Cleveland’s airport was also the first to operate a lighted landing strip also in 1930.http://www.clevelandairport.com/site/413/default.aspx
