Like all terrier dogs, the Airedale had its origin in being used to hunt. This dog was particularly used for the hunting of otters and larger game around the region of Yorkshire, England, known as Airedale. More recently they have been used in Police work. Previously known as being the largest of the Terrier breeds, but since have been surpassed with a newer breed, the Black Russian Terrier.
Although often referred to as a non-shedding dog, Airedale Terriers do actually shed.http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/lightshedders.htm However their shedding is considerably less than in most dog breeds, and there are truly no such thing as totally non-shedding dogs. Their coat is dense and wiry, laying close to the body and the hairs are not overly long.
In color these dogs are always tan with a black (gray hairs allowed) saddle. In the United Kingdom their tails are left long, but they are frequently docked in the United States.http://www.anti-dockingalliance.co.uk/airedaleTerrier.htm
The Airedale Terrier has a temperament typical of most terrier dogs, that being active and alert. They can be aggressive if not handled properly and if left on their own they may become destructive.http://therealowner.com/dogs/dealing-with-a-destructive-dog/ These dogs can sometimes be stubborn and are not necessarily good dogs for beginners, particularly those with little time to spend working with their dog.
Health Problems
Airedale Terriers often suffer from Hip Dysplasia.http://www.recoverysa.com/hip_dysplasia_dogs.htm They also are no strangers to skin problems, which are often linked to allergies to ingredients in dog food.http://therealowner.com/shopping/what-is-in-your-dogs-food/ This breed is prone to bloat and eye problems. Like most dogs, cancer is a common problem.http://www.bukisa.com/articles/3995_preventing-cancer-in-dogs As with most terriers failure to care for their coat can cause painful matting, while not a direct health problem it is a concern.
Sports or Activities
The most common use of Airedale Terriers today is as family dogs. They have divided into two types, the larger one still being used for hunting, while the smaller being used in dog shows. They may also be used in Police work and as guard dogs. http://therealowner.com/dogs/how-to-select-and-train-a-good-guard-dog/
Being fairly smart dogs they enjoy learning new things but can get bored quickly. Obedience lessons are important.
