The Pacific Coral Route and Beyond
In 1940, TEAL (later Air New Zealand) offered its first trans-oceanic services with flying boats across the Tasman Sea and the Pacific. In 1951 the Pacific Coral Route from Auckland to Fiji, the Cook Islands and Tahiti was inaugurated with a flying boat service. TEAL became fully owned by the government of New Zealand in 1961. They were also owners of National Airways Corporation (NAC) established in 1947. Both companies operated the international and domestic air services for New Zealand, separately. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TEAL
In 1965, TEAL was renamed Air New Zealand; that year also marked the introduction of the jet age for the company with its first DC-8 commercial jet. In 1973, the company started to use the Maori koru logo, a fern frond unfolding, on the tail of all its aircraft. Later, in 1978 the company was finally merged with NAC forming the first New Zealand world level airline which offered both international and domestic services. Today, the airline has become the national carrier of New Zealand and is the only one in the world that flies a route around the globe. The company was privatized in 1989 but re-nationalized in 2002. The government owns now a 76.5% stake in the company. http://www.airnewzealand.com/aboutus/corporateprofile/companyhistory/default.htm#the_story_begins -
