PEPFAR
In 2003, President George W. Bush committed the United States to providing funds to help in the fight against AIDS in Africa. The program, President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), allocated $15 billion over the course of the first five years. The money went to provide not only medication and supplies, but also training of medical staff in the hardest hit areas of Africa. The program has helped over 240,000 babies to be born without HIV and sustains over 10 million on medical treatments for AIDS.The Guardian: The Bush Years: AIDS in Africa (January 19, 2009)
