Gameplay

Afro Samurai is a fairly straightforward action game that casts you in the role of the title character as he attempts to attain the Number One headband. Along the way, you'll encounter a wide variety of foes to defeat. X and Y control quick and strong attacks, you can jump with A and kick with B.

Aside from these normal attacks, you can go into a special "focus" mode where time slows down and everything goes black-and-white by holding down on the Left Trigger. Afro Samurai also has a special instant-kill move, performed by holding down X or Y and then letting go exactly when the controller vibrates or your sword shines. If you perform the maneuver correctly, Afro Samurai will pull off a sword slice that kills an enemy in a single hit. The angle of this "perfect slice" move can be adjusted while being charged up, to make sure that it hits.1up.com: Afro Samurai Hands-On (October 7, 2008)

  1. The game begins with a brief cutscene, showing Afro in a bit of peril with Ninja Ninja narrating.
  2. You'll gain control in a minute. Use the left thumbstick to move around and the right thumbstick to control the camera.
  3. Two enemies will rush toward you, providing the game's first opportunity for combat. Press X for a weak attack and Y for a strong attack. A jumps, B kicks and RT blocks.
  4. Multiple attacks can be strung together to form combos. Try leading with a kick to stun your opponent, then following with a couple X attacks, then a couple Y attacks.
  5. After a few waves of enemies, you'll be able to move forward. Head over the bridge and through the town.
  6. You'll reach a door with a sparkling icon. Approach it and press B to kick the door open, then head inside.
  7. One of the guys at the bar will approach Afro looking to fight. Hold LT here to enter In-Focus mode.
  8. This power allows Afro to perform devastating special moves. Hold X while holdling LT to charge up an attack. Release the button when Afro's blade shimmers to perform a brutal slice attack. Try doing the same on the next enemy by holding Y.
  9. You can also sweep-kick enemies while in Focus mode. Press B to knock the third enemies off his feet.
  10. After this, the last inhabitant of the bar will run outside. Head after him. Around the first corner, you'll be ambushed by a few more enemies.
  11. Achievement: Hold LT to enter focus mode again, and use the left thumbstick to line up an attack. Charge X and wait until two enemies are standing near each other. Let go, and you'll slash them both, giving you "Two Birds with One Sword."
  12. Clear out the rest of the group, and a pair slightly tougher enemies will come your way. They are easily defeated by alternating between X, X, X and Y, Y, Y attacks.
  13. HINT: If you're stuck on where to go, you can press down on the D-Pad to activate the Ninja Ninja Compass. Afro's partner will point you in the right direction.
  14. You'll pass the bar you walked into a minute ago. Turn right around the next corner, then turn left. Along this path, you'll see a Teddy Bear on the ground. Simply slice or kick it, and Afro's health will be restored.
  15. Head into the clearing to reveal a cutscene.

      1. The area is now flooded with enemies, but you can get a leg up on them by pressing LB to enter Overfocus mode. This will slow the enemies down while allowing Afro to move in real time.
      2. Use a combination of X and Y attacks to defeat these enemies. It helps to alternate between a few presses of each button.
      3. Don't stop churning out combos until all of the enemies are dead. If you're swinging at empty space, you can use the left thumbstick to redirect your attacks -- just point Afro at the nearest enemy. With any luck, you'll earn some Achievements for cutting off various limbs.
      4. HINT: To view a list of more advanced combos, press the back button. Performing lengthy combos allows Afro to stay focused, at which point he can perform Horizontal or Vertical Perfect Slices by pressing X or Y respectively. These attacks build Afro's experience, unlocking even more combos.
      5. After this initial wave of enemies, a few more of the tougher enemies will appear. They're pretty good about blocking most combos, but keep working at it and you'll eventually find success. Another option is to enter focus mode by holding LT, knocking the enemy off his feet with a sweep kick, then exiting focus mode and finishing him off with a combo.
      6. When only one enemy remains, a boss will appear, showing his might by flinging the last enemy out of sight.
      7. Attacking this boss is futile. After a moment, it will fling a smoke bomb in your direction, and Afro will pass out. This ends the mission, giving you the "And So It Begins" Achievement

The Daimyo's Story

  1. YouTube: Afro Samurai Walkthrough - The Daimyo's Story Part 1 HD (Time: 9:48)

  1. Move forward along the bridge. The patch of birds clustered in the middle represent a Memento. Collecting all five in each level gives you an Achievement and unlocks a new skill.
  2. Continue forward. At the end of the bridge, you'll meet a small wave of enemies. Defeat them with combos; it's particularly effective to hold Y after hitting that button three times in a row.
  3. Once you've dealt with these enemies, head towards the large building straight ahead. To the right, there's a depressed area with tall walls on all sides. Face the right wall and climb up the side by running towards it and holding A.
  4. Quickly go through the doorway at the top. There's an enemy across the gap to your left with a gun, and you'll want to get out of the way before he shoots.
  5. Move through the indoor corridor, then go back outside to face the gunman. Hit him with a quick combo to take him down.
  6. Continue along the side of the building to the next doorway. Head inside and face the gate to your left. There's a lever along this wall that you can pull by jumping up to it.
  7. Go back outside and move across the narrow beam that crosses the building's front entrance. Head into the next room and face the wall on your right. There's another lever here to pull.
  8. After pulling both levers, go outside and jump down to the ground. You can how head through the building's front entrance. Go through and head to the bridge.
  9. An enemy dressed in red awaits at the other side, but as he approaches, a horde of enemies in hats leaps out of the water.
  10. The weaker enemies will continue to respawn as you kill them, but it's not a worthless effort; stringing together big combos on them charges Afro's ability to Overfocus, so keep attacking until you see a small glowing object circling around Afro.
  11. Once this happens, you're ready to Overfocus. Press LB and the screen will go gray. Make sure to attack the main enemy as you're unleashing combos, as he's now easily defeated with a few slashes. You'll likely level up for completing this task.
  12. Clear out the remaining enemies and head up the stairs.
  13. There are quite a few items to collect here before moving through the door ahead. Start with the path to the left of the door and grab the Memento at the end.
  14. When you're near the main door, there's also a small staircase that leads down and to the left, just before you reach the pathway with the door. Follow this down and you'll find a Teddy Bear.
  15. You can follow the same two types of pathways on the right side of the building for two more Teddy Bears.
  16. After collecting everything, head back to the door with the sparkling icon on it. Kick it open and head inside.
  17. You'll hear a brief dialogue from a new character, The Daimyo, and a couple enemies will appear. If you're having trouble breaking through their blocks, try holding RT yourself and waiting for them to attack, then combo with a counter.
  18. Four more enemies will appear after the first two. Use the same strategy to take them down.
  19. You can now kick through the door on the left side of this room. First, you may want to head under the main staircase and get the two Teddy Bears in either corner of the back wall.
  20. Going through the door, a few more enemies will approach. They like to block as well, so try getting close to them with a combo, then holding LT to go into Focus mode. Quickly hold X and let go as soon as Afro's blade glimmers. If you're near an enemy, the attack should result in an instant kill.
  21. The next room is filled with gears and steamy machinery. Head across on the beam, then go to the platform on the left.
  22. There's a raised beam ahead, which you can perch onto by jumping towards it. Leap again to the next beam, then to the next platform.
  23. Run across the beam to your left, then jump down the set of three platforms. Along the mechanics to your left, kick the panel. This will stop the clock in this building's main room.
  24. Now, run across the beam from your current platform to exit this room.
  25. YouTube: Afro Samurai Walkthrough - The Daimyo's Story Part 2 HD (Time: 10:20)
  1. A few enemies will attack you here. Try to hit them with big combos to charge up your Overfocus. You'll want it for the tall enemy in red that follows.
  2. If you can't use an Overfocus on this enemy, wear him down with regular combos, then use In-Focus attacks to finish him off.
  3. Kick open the door in the next room. Head up the stairs and you'll be out in the main hall once again. Move towards the stairs leading to the clock, and you'll be ambushed by a crowd of enemies.
  4. Quickly backtrack so all the enemies are in front if you. The trick here is to avoid getting surrounded, so attack the enemies on the sides of the crowd instead of jumping into the middle of the pile.
  5. The weaker foes will respawn, so you can attack them to charge up Overfocus. This will make it easy to kill the harder enemies. Alternatively, you can use regular combos on the smaller guys and In-Focus attacks to kill the tough enemies.
  6. If you do get surrounded, run away from the pack, then turn your attacks towards the perimeter enemies once again. The weaker enemies will stop respawning once you've killed the two guys in red.
  7. Go up the stairs and turn left. Follow the path to the clock, and jump on its hand.
  8. Run across the hand and jump to the next platform. Follow this path to the front side of the room, and you'll see that you can wall run across to another platform. To wall run, face slightly towards the wall and hold A as you jump. Don't miss the Teddy Bear on this platform before wall jumping again to the other side of the room.
  9. Before heading straight into the next room, turn right, so you're heading back towards the clock. Another Memento is located inside the small alcove to your left.
  10. Now, go to the hallway that you passed before. Kick the doorway at the end and head through.
  11. Four very scantily clad women are in the next room, and they're looking to kill Afro. Their attacks are easily deflected by holding RT, so don't be afraid to block while you get your bearings.
  12. Position yourself so you're not surrounded. Get close to one of the enemies with a combo, then hold LT to get In Focus. As you do this, the nearest girl will always leap into the air. Hold X and wait until she lands to unleash your attack.
  13. Follow up with combos. Afro can do a lot of damage to these girls simply by executing a chain of fluid attacks. Try leading off with a kick (B) to knock them off balance, then follow with X, X, X,, Y, Y, Y, Y.
  14. Once all four girls are defeated, head through the open passageway.
  15. Follow this path and you'll reach a group of two regular enemies and two girls. Take out the weaker goons first, then use the same strategy as before to fell the girls.
  16. YouTube: Afro Samurai Walkthrough - The Daimyo's Story Part 3 HD (Time: 7:43)
  1. Go through the next door, and drop down to the floor below. There are two more girls here, easily defeated with combos and In Focus attacks.
  2. Once the girls are defeated, grab the Teddy Bear from one of the display cases, then jump on the nearby fallen shelf. From here, you can jump to the next platform. Kick the door open and head into the next room.
  3. Another combination of regular foes and barely dressed women awaits here. Now would be a good spot to use Overfocus if you can. Otherwise, fight these enemies with regular combos.
  4. The barriers over the two nearby levers will drop once the enemies are dead. Face each lever and kick them to throw the switches.
  5. There are two more levers over the divider in the middle of the room. Jump towards the divider to grab the ledge and climb over. Kick the other two levers to move the floor up.
  6. On this side of the room, you'll see a low-hanging perch. Face the perch so you can see another perch beyond it, followed by a raised platform. Jump up, and go over the beam that leads to the other side of the room. Wall run to the next platform, then jump across the next two platforms for another Memento.
  7. Now, jump down to the divider and head towards the door with the sparkling icon. Kick it open and head through. Grab the Teddy Bear in this corridor before heading through the next door.
  8. The Daimyo will release gas in this next room, and it slowly drains Afro's health. Therefore, it's important to keep an eye out for Teddy Bears as you ascend the stairway.
  9. The first Bear is found on the second floor, just after you kill the enemy here. Look for a depression in the wall on your right.
  10. There's another Bear after the enemy on the third floor. Killing enemies restores health as well, so you be sure to quickly dispose of each one as you move up the stairs.
  11. The fourth floor has a Teddy Bear, but no enemy. Grab it from the depressed wall and keep going.
  12. The fifth floor has two enemies, but no bear. They're not much of a threat, just take them out a few taps of X followed by repeated tapping of Y.
  13. Five enemies await on the sixth floor. You'll have to go heavy on the Y attacks here, making big sword swipes to take these guys out as fast as possible. Once you've defeated them all, head up to the last floor.
  14. Take a right at the first passageway. Kick the door here and head outside.
  15. You're safe from the smoke. Go to the left, and grab the Teddy Bear near the staircase to restore your health, then head up.
  16. Achievement: Before going all the way up the stairs, take the path that goes down. Follow it around the corner to the right, and grab the last Memento in this level, giving you "The Child Without a Name" and a new skill.
  17. The skill you've earned is the Sideways Attack, one of several "Father's Legacy" moves you earn by collecting Mementos. To perform it, hold LT to go In Focus, hold the left thumbstick in any direction and press A to do a small dodge, then press X or Y to quickly follow with a slash.
  18. Near the Memento, the path continues to the right. Go through, and grab the Teddy Bear off the banister.
  19. YouTube: Afro Samurai Walkthrough - The Daimyo's Story Part 3 HD (Time: 5:42)
  1. Now, go back to the staircase and continue upwards. You'll be surrounded by enemies.
  2. Press LT to use Overfocus if you have it, and quickly kill as many of these foes as you can. Otherwise, move to an area where you're not surrounded and start hacking away.
  3. HINT: When a couple of enemies get close, you can knock them off their feet by holding LT and pressing B. Follow up with X attacks and you may have a chance at juggling them in the air.
  4. Once all the enemies are defeated, The Daimyo will appear.
  5. Initially, you can hold RT to block his attacks, then counter with combos to score damage. After a couple of successful attempts at this, however, Afro and this boss will lock swords and exchange dialogue.
  6. Now, your best chance at attacking is to Parry. This requires hitting RT just before The Daimyo lands his attacks. If you're successful, the clashing of blades will emit a curvy, ornamental looking spark. Follow up with combos.
  7. If you're not successful at Parrying, Afro will be knocked backwards. Line yourself up again so you have a good camera angle on the action and get ready to block once more.
  8. Repeat this pattern until the boss is defeated. You'll get the "A Secret History" Achievement for completing the level.
