Afro Samurai School Invasion

This is part 2 of our complete Afro Samurai game guide, featuring School Invasion.

School Invasion

  1. The level begins with the Sword School under attack. Follow the Sword Master along the path in front of you and take either of the two stairways down.
  2. You'll face a few enemies here, but they don't put up much of a fight. Take care of them with a few quick combos and continue forward. Take the stairway down through the door in front of you.
  3. There are a few enemies here, and they're just as easy as the last group. Start with X attacks and finish off with Y.
  4. On the right side of the room, there's a small raised platform that holds a Teddy Bear on the end. Grab it if you need health, then head out the door on the left side of the room.
  5. There are a small group of enemies to fight out here, made easier with the Sword Master's help. Standard combos of X attacks followed by Y attacks should do the trick here. Don't worry if you run into the Sword Master while attacking; Afro can't damage him.
  6. After defeating this group, the Sword Master will point you along a path to a bell you must ring. First, find the smaller path to the right of this way, between the big rock and the building. A small alcove here holds the level's first Memento. As always, these are represented by a small gathering of black birds.
  7. Now, take the path that leads along the water. Wall run along the left wall where the bridge is broken.
  8. You'll learn a new maneuver up ahead. To Criss Cross Jump, go to the narrow corridor, then move towards the right wall and jump towards it. Afro will run up partway, at which point you can press A to jump to the other side. Hit A one more time after that to leap to the next platform.
  9. There's a large group of enemies to fight here. Now's a good time to try out your first Father's Legacy skill. Enter In Focus mode when the crowd gets close and wait until one of the enemies attacks. Hold the thumbstick to the left or right and hit A to dodge, then follow with X to slice him in the back. Finish him off with a combo.
  10. Try incorporating kicks into your combos against this group of enemies. It will break their blocks and allow you to kill them more easily.
  11. Once all the enemies are defeated, turn left and head towards the set of variously shaped posts in the ground. Look for the gathering of black birds on the ground and walk through them to get the second Memento in this level.
  12. Move towards the set of descending stairs. There's a female fighter that must be dealt with before you can continue. Knock her off guard with a kick, then follow up with combos.
  13. Go down the stairs and jump across the first gap. Be sure to get as close as you can to the edge before jumping.
  14. There are a few simple enemies up ahead. Use the regular X and Y combos to defeat them. Going In Focus and and executing Perfect Strikes by holding and releasing these buttons also works well in these close quarters.
  15. Watch out for the holes in the wooden planks as you continue forward. When you reach the rocks, first head to the left and grab the Teddy Bear, then drop down to the lower rocks on the right.
  16. You can perform a Running Wall Jump to get across to the next platforms. Start with a regular wall run along the right side, then hit A to jump.
  17. At the second rock wall, wait as long as possible after your wall run to jump. Leap up the wall in front of you to climb to the next platform, then head left to continue up the rocks.
  18. Next, you'll get a visual overview of where you need to go. It seems to be an obstacle course of sorts. Start by running up the two walls on the right side of the sheer cliff wall.
  19. Jump to the platform on the other side. Leap up the wall in front of you, then line yourself up carefully on the beam that goes back to the other side. Hop up to the wooden platform and head towards the tunnel.
  20. An enemy will appear in the distance and make an obscene gesture. Go after him.
  21. You'll reach the area that holds the alarm bell, but first there are a few waves of enemies to deal with. During your first attack, lead off with a kick, then follow with a couple X attacks followed by Y attacks. On the remaining enemies in each wave, start by blocking their attacks with RT and following with a combo.

  1. After three waves, you can kick the alarm bell to sound it. However, this unleashes a new, tough-looking enemy and a few weaker foes.
  2. One of these enemies will come up to attack you first. You can kill her elegantly by getting close with a combo, then going In Focus and executing a Perfect Slice.
  3. Head through the small opening along the left side of the wooden wall, on the opposite side of where you entered this area.
  4. Before going after the big guy, take down the two smaller enemies first. Use the same method you tried on the previous enemy.
  5. The big enemy will come after you when the others are defeated. The best time to strike is after he lets out a yell and brings down his blunt weapon. Simply run out of the way, then come back with an attack, making your combo as long as possible by varying X and Y attacks.
  6. A few combos should fells this miniboss, and a small group of weak enemies will enter the area. They're easily defeated with regular attacks.
  7. HINT: If you find an enemy attacking you as you're finishing off another foe, hold RT to block. Deflecting the attack will save you health and leave open the opportunity to start attacking the next enemy.
  8. Go through the doorway these enemies came from, but don't head over the drawbridge yet. Immediately look to your right and you'll see the next Memento.
  9. Now, head over the bridge.
  10. The old man and Afro will stare at each other for a moment, then three enemies will appear -- the same kind that were guarding the miniboss. Lead off attacking them with kicks, then follow with combos of X, X, X, Y, Y, Y and hold Y.
  11. As you defeat each enemy, another will appear. This happens a few times; just keep using the same strategy until they are all defeated.
  12. Now, go back the way you came. Once you're through the wooden door way, turn around and jump up to the ledge on either side of this wooden structure.
  13. On the wall above the doorway side, there's a level you can pull by jumping up to it. Do so, then jump down to the ground.
  14. Some weak enemies will appear. You can kill them if they're in the way. Otherwise, jump up the ledge on the opposite side of the doorway and pull the lever. Clean out the remaining enemies to finish this part of the level.
  15. After a brief cutscene, Afro is back in the Sword School and Otsuru is missing. Head out the doorway in the corner of the room.

  1. Go towards the platform where one of the children is trapped. You'll have a limited but fairly generous amount of time to save her.
  2. The first wave of enemies is fairly weak, and can be defeated with regular combos.
  3. Stronger enemies will follow. Remember, they can be hit by entering In Focus, waiting until they leap and fall back down to the ground, and unleashing Perfect Slice. Follow with combos.
  4. Once all the enemies are defeated here, you'll have to move to where another child is being held captive.
  5. Start by killing off the enemies surrounding the child. They are easily defeated with any kind of attack.
  6. Stronger foes will follow. They like to swipe at Afro while running past him, so keep on your guard and block with RT when you're not attacking.
  7. The Horizontal Perfect Slice works quite well on these enemies, particularly when they clump together in close proximity to Afro. Charge your In Focus with regular attacks, and when you're surrounded, hold LT, then hold X and let go when your blade shimmers. With any luck, you'll slice multiple enemies in half.
  8. Kill all these attackers and their reinforcements, and Jinno will save the child.

  1. Now, head towards the burning dormitory. You'll find a pathway around to the rear of the building on the right side.
  2. Once you get to the back, look on the back side of the large pile of objects to find a Teddy Bear. Then, keep moving towards the entrance.
  3. You'll have to fight a small wave of enemies outside. No big deal, just use a combination of weak combos and Perfect Slices to finish them off.
  4. Go inside once the flow of enemies outside has stopped. Otsuru is behind a wall of flames to your right.
  5. The path on the right is too fiery to reach, but the fourth Memento is there. Look for it just before the big wall of flames.
  6. Now, go back towards the building entrance and head to the path on the right. Kill the first couple of enemies here and keep moving.
  7. Jump over the two burning logs as you move towards the back of the building. Enter the courtyard on your right when you reach the doorway.
  8. Directly across from the entrance, there's a Teddy Bear. Don't grab it -- simply take note of its location for later. The next doorway to continue through is along this wall, to your right.
  9. Turn left when you go through the doorway. Kill the enemy that's threatening Otsuru, and Jinno will come to her rescue. Then, head back to the courtyard.
  10. You'll be ambushed by a huge crowd of enemies. Thin the first wave with regular combos, but be ready to block. You can press RT at the instant you see an incoming attack to deflect it.
  11. Once you've killed these weaker enemies, a group of stronger ones will jump in. The same basic strategy works here, but you'll have to really string together long combos to do damage to these foes. If you have an Overfocus charged up, now's a good time to use it by hitting LT.
  12. A few more weaker enemies will appear once the stronger ones are defeated. Take them out, and the ringleader will run away. Exit the courtyard the way you originally came in. Don't forget to grab the Teddy Bear if you haven't already done so.
  13. Watch for the falling log as you exit the building. Once outside, go around the corner on your right, back to where you freed the second girl.
  14. To the left, there's a staircase that leads into the building in front of you. Go inside.
  15. Kill the first group of weak enemies and go to the back of the building. Head up the stairs on the right, so you're on the left side when you reach the second floor.
  16. You'll see an enemy at the other side of the room aiming a gun. Hold RT to block, then charge him and take him down.
  17. Go up to the third floor, where Jinno is facing off a couple of enemies. Kill the two enemies guarding him, and a small wave of opponents will follow. This is an easy battle with Jinno by your side.
  18. You'll see a cutscene showing the Sword Master in trouble, then you'll be inside another building. Head out the door in front of you.
  19. Run through the cave, to the path along the water. There's a small group of enemies ahead. Use Y attacks to make quick work of them.
  20. Achievement: Go down the stairs. To your left along the path, there's a gap in the rock wall, where you can see the water and crashing waves. Wall jump between these two rocks, then head to the right along these platforms to get the final Memento. You'll get the "Afro Samurai" Achievement. You also get a new skill, which allows you to perform Horizontal and Vertical Perfect Slices in the air.
  21. Jump back down to where you were and continue along the path. There are a couple stronger enemies to fight along the way. You can beat them by getting close with a combo, then going In Focus and executing a Vertical Perfect Slice.
  22. Keep going. Kill the next group of weak enemies the same way you did the first.
  23. Go up the stairs to where Sword Master is waiting. Strong enemies will continually leap up to this platform. It's not a terribly difficult ending to the level; just use combos to get close to them and Horizontal Perfect Slices to finish them off.
  24. After defeating all the enemies, Jinno will appear, with Otsuru dead in his arms. He'll plunge into the water, ending the level and giving you the "The Death of Innocence" Achievement.
