Afrika Bambaataa History

Born April 17, 1957, Bambaata was initially known to climb the ranks of southeast Bronx gang, the Black Spades, and attained the title of warlord of the projects in which he resided. His interests fell more to music than the usual violence associated with gangs, and in 1970 started DJing, amassing a diverse range of music to differentiate himself from then top DJ Kool Herc. Bambatta developed an organization he named the Zulu Nation that tapped breakdancers, rappers, deejays, and graffiti artists throughout the 70s and 80s.http://www.oldschoolhiphop.com/artists/deejays/afrika.htm

In 1990, Bambaata made the Most Important Americans of the 20th Century issue of Life Magazine, which focused on his work involving the anti-apartheid movement. He started the Planet Rock record label in 1992, named after his often sampled album of the same name, and continues the molding and development of the Hip Hop industry today.http://www.zulunation.com/afrika.html
