  • The Afghan hound is a member of the sighthound family. The first Afghan hounds came to England from Afghanistan in the early 1900s. They were formally accepted into the American Kennel Club on September 14, 1948. Because of their gentle disposition, many people keep Afghan hounds as family pets.Breed Retriever: Afghan Hound
  • Health Problems

Afghan hounds have been known to suffer from eye problems, most commonly cataracts. Their long coat requires daily brushing to prevent matting and reduce shedding.
  • Sports or Activities

As part of the sighthound group, Afghan hounds can be used in hunting. They are also commonly competitively shown. Afghan hounds that are kept as pets require substantial daily exercise or a large yard to run, making them a less than prime choice for apartment living.
