Affiliate Marketing is an Internet marketing practice in which individuals can earn a commission for directing traffic to other sites. Each time a customer completes a purchase by using an affiliate link, the affiliate is awarded a percentage of the revenue. Individuals can join affiliate programs or networks. Referrals are tracked using an alphanumeric identifier located in the affiliate's custom link code.

CDNOW implemented an early version of affiliate marketing with its 1994 BuyWeb program. Amazon.com followed suit in 1996 with its Amazon Associates program.
