The film begins with Chris (Shue) preparing for a date with her boyfriend Mike Todwell (Whitford). However, when Mike shows up at her door to cancel because of his sick sister, Chris disappointedly books a babysitting gig for the Andersons. The Anderson children are teenage Brad (Coogan), who has an obsession with Chris, and his little sister Sara (Brewton), who has an obsession with comic book hero Thor.

When Chris receives a panicked phone call from her friend Brenda (Miller), who has run away from home and stranded herself at the Chicago bus station, she is forced to pile her charges into her mother's car to go retrieve her friend. As they are about to leave, Brad's obnoxious buddy Daryl (Rapp) arrives and convinces Chris to take him along.

While Brenda braves the characters of the city bus station -- a woman who steals her glasses leaving her blind, a homeless man who wants her out of his phone booth, a thug brandishing a gun, a belligerent weiner vendor, and a runaway sewer rat -- Chris, Brad, Sara and Daryl have their own series of adventures on the city streets. The group finds themselves stranded on the expressway, kidnapped in a botched car jacking, chased by car thieves, singing in a blues club, facing off against gang members, and finally avoiding detection by the Anderson parents.

As the night progresses Chris will do whatever it takes to get Brenda, Brad, Sara, Daryl, herself and her Mom's car back to the Andersons in one piece without being caught.
