Adelaide, the capital of the Australian state of South Australia, is the fifth largest city in the country. Founded in 1836 by the British as a planned city, it was named after Queen Adelaide, the wife of King William IV. Colonel William Light, the first surveyor-general of South Australia, designed the city and chose where it would be located. Today, the city is home to South Australia’s government and finance institutions. It is also known for its lively festivals, including the Adelaide Festival of Arts, Fringe Festival, Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Adelaide Film Festival, Adelaide Festival of Ideas and the world’s largest Christmas parade – the Adelaide Christmas Pageant.
