Early Life
After growing up in California, Gadahn converted to Islam at the age of 17, joining the Islamic Society of Orange County. He was expelled from the mosque after attacking an employee, and served jail time and performed community service for the attack.CBS News: U.S. Qaeda Suspect's Troubled Past
Joining al Qaeda
Gadhan then moved to Pakistan, where he wrote for a newspaper and started a family. In 2004, he joined al Qaeda by attending a training camp and went on to serve as a translator and spokesperson for the terrorist group. The FBI added Gadhan's name to their most wanted list that same year.
