  • Start of Major League Career

In the 2002 MLB Draft, Loewen was selected by the Baltimore Orioles as the 4th pick just after one season of college baseball making him the highest pick for a Canadian player to be drafted. Loewen was named the Orioles top prospect by Baseball America in 2004 and dropped to second place in 2006. Loewen earned a great deal of international attention when playing in the World Baseball Classic for Canada in the 2006 games. Loewen faced star studded players for the U.S. such as Chipper Jones, Derrick Lee and Vernon Wells. Canada went on to win the game 8-6. In 2006 the Orioles called him back to the majors. In Loewen's first four starts, he faced former Cy Young Award winners Randy Johnson, Tom Glavine and Roy Halladay.
