Activase is used in a number of clot-related illnesses, not merely strokes but also pulmonary embolisms and myocardial infarctions. Effectiveness is dependent upon timeframe, in the case of stroke -- if the drug is not administered within three hours, it is unlikely to provide any benefit (or six hours, in the case of injection directly through arterial catheters to the site of the clot). Because the substance dissolves blood clots, it can result in severe hemorrage if it is administered without caution. An unusual but recent application of the drug shows that it can reduce the need for amputation in frostbite patients.Archives Of Surgery: Reduction of the Incidence of Amputation in Frostbite Injury with Thrombolytic Therapy Disclaimer: The content in this page is not a substitute for professional medical advice.
