Published by DC Comics, Action Comics is an ongoing American comic book series that is notable for introducing Superman in its first issue.
Background
Action Comics was originally an anthology comic book featuring characters like Tex Thompson, Congo Bill, and Tommy Tomorrow (in addition to Superman).
With its protagonist originally written as a villain by creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, the Superman strip was rejected by various publishers. Siegel and Shuster decided to make Superman a hero instead and shortly before the publication of Action Comics #1 in 1938, editor Vin Sullivan chose to buy them.
The printed result was made up of panels from several previously rejected Superman strips. By the 1960s, Superman became the sole character featured in Action Comics. It is one of the longest running comic titles to date.
