Aces of the Deep is a World War II combat simulation video game in which the user controls a German U-Boat. It was first released in 1994, winning PC Gamer's Reader's Choice Award for Best Wargame, and is still considered a classic of the submarine-simulator genre by gaming aficionados. It is the final installment of Dynamix's Aces WWII combat series, and the only one that is played from an Axis-powers perspective.
Unique Features
Several features of Aces of the Deep have given the game a much longer shelf-life than most mid-1990s games. First, a unique single-player "Career Mode" allows the user to choose which year of the war (1939-1945) he or she wants to the game to begin, tailoring the ships and weaponry to suit the period. Second, Aces of the Deep contains a higher degree of detail and historical accuracy than many war games, in both the design of the weapons and the chronological sequence in which they appear. Lastly, a 1995 edition called COMMAND: Aces of the Deep contains voice-recognition features for controlling the submarine.
