When weather conditions are not permitting outdoor activities, nature centers, museums and other indoor visitors centers can provide educational and fun activities. In addition to Arcadia, there are over 30 other natural refuges and parks throughout Maine.

The history of Acadia could possibly be dated back to the Native American Indians that lived and thrived upon the land approximately 6000 years ago. Signs of their settlements have been discovered throughout the region, although there is no proven documentation of their settlement. However, the first written piece of history is presumed to be from the early 1600's when in 1604, Samuel Champlain led an expedition that landed on Mount Desert Island. The french explorer recorded his encounters and described the stone landscape in his journals. He named the area “Isles des monts Desert” for its appearance. To avoid the conflicts in the colonies, families fled north during the Revolutionary War, settling in the coastal region of Maine Many of the villages and towns that were built during this time are still in existence today. It was not until George B. Dorr, a spokesman for the conservation effort began slowly purchasing the land in an attempt to preserve the natural landscape we know today as Acadia National Park. President Wilson signed an act in 1919, declaring the coastal land in Maine as Lafayette National Park.
