  • Acadia National Park, which is made up of over 40,000 acres, became the first national park to be established east of the Mississippi River, and is located in Maine. After a fire ruined about 10,000 acres of the park in 1947, much of the regrowth was done naturally, which some people say made the scenery more beautiful. Over three million people visit yearly to see the scenery, and study the different species of mammals and birds. Other activities include things to do all year round from hiking to ice fishing, and there are educational programs for teachers and students during the school year. Two of the campgrounds that are in the park are Blackwoods and Seawall, which both are open through the summer months. One of the 26 mountains that are located in the park is Cadillac Mountain, which is one of the highest mountains on the coastline, there is a paved road for visitors to drive to the top, as well as many hiking trails. There are 45 miles of roads that can only be accessed by a horse and carriage, bikes or walking, which go around the mountains and through valleys. The park is open all year round, but some roads and trails are closed in the winter. The Visitor Center is closed from November 15th through May 14th.http://www.nps.gov/acad/index.htm
