Abhishek went to Boston University to pursue his college studies but dropped out half way and returned to India to begin his acting career.

His first film, Refugee, was an average success and also starred Kareena Kapoor. After that, Abhishek went on to do a number of films, which did not have much audience appeal. In 2004 he starred in Yuva, which gained him critical acclaim. That year he also appeared in Dhoom, his first box office hit. Since then he has starred in a number of commercially successful films.

In 2007, he married Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai.
