• Background

  A decorated Somali National Army officer, Ahmed was instrumental in founding the Somali Salvation Democratic Front (SSDF) in the early 1980s. • Extrajudicial Killings

  Militia members loyal to Ahmed have been accused by the U.S. State Department of having been involved in the extrajudicial killings of two non-combatants, Garah Mohammend Said Gom'ad and Sultan Ahmed Mohammed Hurre.

• Assassination Attempts

  On June 1, 2008, Islamic insurgents fired rockets at a plane carrying Ahmed and other officials as it was preparing to take off in Mogadishu. The assassination attempt was the second on Ahmed since taking office.
