In the first and most acclaimed film adaptation of Tennessee Williams' classic play, 1951's A Streetcar Named Desire starred Marlon Brando in one of his most iconic roles. He'd played Stanley Kowalski on Broadway and reprised the role on celluloid to great effect—although he was the only one of the film's major stars to fail to win an Oscar.
Big Lines
Brando's agonized wailing of the line "Stella! Hey Stella!" ranks 45th on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 greatest movie quotations. The character of Blanche DuBois (played in the first film by Gone with the Wind star Vivien Leigh) utters No. 75: "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers."
