A Patch Of Blue is a 1965 film about a blind white woman who falls in love with an African-American man during the heyday of the American Civil Rights Movement. The plot is a thinly veiled metaphor for the concept of color-blindness, or the adage that "Love is Blind." Sidney Poitier stars as the male lead, opposite then-newcomer Elizabeth Hartman, with an Oscar-winning supporting performance by Shelley Winters. Hartman—a native of Youngstown, OH, who was chosen for the role despite being an acting unknown—received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Her subsequent roles included work on You're a Big Boy Now, The Beguiled and The Secret of NIMH. She fell from a building in 1987, a presumed suicide.
