A Lesson Before Dying is a novel by writer Ernest Gaines. Set in Louisiana in the 1940s, it is a story about a man falsely accused of murder.

Plot Synopsis

A Lesson Before Dying tells the story of Jefferson. Jefferson is a young African-American man who is falsely accused of murder. He comes up against racism and bigotry during his trial. As his execution approaches Jefferson must make peace with the town that has wronged him.
