Career Overview
Newman joined the Vancouver pop/rock band Zumpano in 1992, and recorded two albums with the band for Sub Pop Records. The band, named for drummer Jason Zumpano, unofficially broke up in 1996. Zumpano and a few other members of the group went on to form the band Sparrow in 2003, while Newman launched The New Pornographers in 2000. Sometimes called a "supergroup," the Porngraphers feature a vareity of prominent Canadian musicians, including Dan Bejar (who also records as Destroyer), Neko Case, Todd Fancey and Kurt Dahle.
The Pornographers take their name from Japanese film The Pornographers and not, as widely reported, from a Jimmy Swaggart quote labeling rock music "the new pornography". The group have recorded four popular indie albums together on Matador Records, including 2007's Challengers.
In 2004, Newman took time off from the band to record solo effort, The Slow Wonder.
