Yolanda King

Guide Note: Actress and human rights activist Yolanda King was the eldest daughter of Coretta Scott King and Martin Luther King Jr. She earned a Masters degree in theater from NYU, and landed roles in Ghosts of Mississippi, Odessa and in a few episodes of JAG. One of her memorable roles was in the TV miniseries about her father, King, where she starred as Rosa Parks.

King was heavily involved in numerous religious and human rights organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, Human Rights Campaign, the NAACP and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In 1990, she founded Higher Ground Productions, with a mission to deliver "powerful messages of peace, unity and diversity to the world" through "passion for the arts."

King died in Santa Monica on May 15, 2007, presumably due to a heart condition. She was 51.
