Xavier Georgia Bracket

Xavier is the 3rd seed in the West Region. The Musketeers won the Atlantic 10 Regular Season championship with a 27-6 overall record, going 14-2 in league play, and earned an at-large bid. Their opponent, Georgia, struggled during the regular season, finishing in last place in the SEC Eastern Division. However, the Bulldogs ran the table and won the SEC Tournament to claim an automatic selection into the tournament .

Xavier Georgia Pre-Game Analysis

The Xavier Musketeers were the best team in the Atlantic 10 this year for several reasons, but the most identifiable one was their balance. Six different players average double digits in points for the season, led by forwards Josh Duncan and Derrick Brown. To further amplify their sense of teamwork, the Musketeers won each of the 20 games they played in during which 4 of their players scored 10 or more points. Coach Sean Miller's team also plays very effectively on the defensive end of the floor, led by the stingy Stanley Burrell, considered one of the best defensive guards in the country. Although Xavier has reached the tournament six of the last seven years, they've only reached the Sweet Sixteen on two occasions (1990 & 2004). The Georgia Bulldogs seemed destined for a season without any post-season tournament beyond the SEC Tournament. The Bulldogs struggled in conference play during the regular season, winning just 4 of 16 games, and coach Dennis Felton's job seemed in jeopardy. Then came the tournament run, including the memorable effort of winning 3 games inside of 36 hours due to the Atlanta Tornado. With only nine players contributing significant minutes, the Bulldogs came to rely on the play of freshmen Jeremy Price and Zac Swansey (one of the big shot makers from the SEC Tournament). Yet the leadership skills of often overlooked senior guard Sundiata Gaines were prominently on display, as he led the team averaging nearly 15 points and 6 rebounds per game, while also averaging over 4 assists per contest. This will be Georgia's first tournament appearance 2002, and while their magical run through the SEC Tournament was certainly one for the ages, it is worthy to note that this is the 25th anniversary of the school's only Final Four appearance. The Dominique Wilkins led 1983 squad reached the national semifinals that year, only to lose to a team similar in make-up and receiving a lot of comparison to the current Bulldogs; the 1983 NC State Wolfpack. Bulldog fans are hoping this Georgia team has a similar result.
