Update: Just after the closing of the E3 2008 video game conference on July 17, 2008, Blizzard began sending out beta invitations.¹ There is still no word on exactly how many people will be chosen to participate.

On July 3, 2008, Blizzard announced the launch of their beta opt-in program for Wrath of the Lich King, the upcoming expansion to World of Warcraft. Only players with an active subscription to the original game and who own The Burning Crusade will be eligible to apply for a spot in the closed beta-testing phase.² Unlike previous instances where Blizzard randomly selected participants from the community, only applicants who have expressed interest will be selected.³
