William III of England

William III of England ruled from 1689 until 1702. Although not a religious militant, he used his Protestant faith to take the throne from his Catholic father in law, James II of England.¹

William and Mary

William married his first cousin, Mary Stuart, in part to cement an alliance between the Netherlands and England against the French.² They married on November 4, 1677. Mary's father, James II, became the king of England after the death of Charles II in 1685.

Glorious Revolution

William invaded England in 1688, at the urging of British Protestant statesmen,³ in order to unseat James II, who was Catholic. This war, the Glorious Revolution, eventually earned William the crowns of England, Ireland and Scotland.

Death and Succession

William died in 1702 of pneumonia, which is believed to have been a complication caused by a broken collarbone he incurred falling off his horse.⁴ He and Mary had not had any children, so the crown passed to Anne, daughter of King James II and Anne Hyde.
