Why? began as a solo project of Jonathan "Yoni" Wolf in 1997. Yoni's brother, Josiah, and Doug McDiarmid joined later.

Yoni developed Why?'s blend of Hip-Hop and indie rock with several previous projects. First was the lo-fi rap of Greenthink, the second was with the downtempo dreamscapes of cLOUDDEAD
