Whitney Cerak
On April 26, 2006 Whitney Cerak, Laura Van Ryn and seven other people were involved in a car accident in Indiana. Five people perished in the accident. Whitney's parents were told by authorities that their daughter was one of the casualties. At the same time, the Van Ryn stood vigil over what they believed was their daughter's bedside. It wasn't until five weeks after the accident that it became clear that Whitney was the one alive and Laura was the one who had died.

Mistaken Identity
The bodies of the two young women were apparently mixed up at the scene of the crime. Their blond hair and similar features made it hard to tell who was who in the aftermath of the crash. The book Mistaken Identity, written by Don and Susan Van Ryn, Colleen and Newell Cerak, Whitney herself and contributor Mark Tabb chronicles what happened to both families.
