Guide Note: What to Expect When You're Expecting, written by Heidi Murkoff, Arlene Eisenberg and Sandee Hathaway is often toted as the must-have book for expectant mothers. First written in 1984, this book aims to answer many of the questions that moms-to-be may have during pre-conception, pregnancy, labor, delivery and six weeks after birth.

The beginning of each chapter lists what women should expect that month during her pregnancy, from symptoms to the size of the baby and its development.

The book also has sections on issues mothers may be concerned with, nutrition plans, a section for dads-to-be, information on illness, chronic conditions and possible pregnancy complications.

What to Expect When You're Expecting has also come under public scrutiny by many mothers because they feel it focuses on the possible negative aspects of pregnancy that could occur. Most feel that it should have a more positive tone. Some doctors have even gone as far as telling patients to not read the book.

Heidi Murkoff revisited the book and made revisions to incorporate new information. The fourth edition of the book was printed in 2008. Since it was first printed it has sold almost 14 million copies.
