  • 14:35: Xavier trails 48-29 - Burrell makes 1 of 2
  • 14:36: TV TIMEOUT - This has been the most complete effort the Bruins have shown in the tournament so far. Xavier needs to just re-group mentally, show some patience and work their offense, see if they can chip away at the lead between now and the 5-minute mark. This is usually the stretch where the Bruins disappear and let teams back into games - but it doesn't feel like that is coming today.

Halftime

  • At the Half: UCLA leads Xavier 33-24
  • Halftime Stats:
    • For UCLA: 13-25 from the field, 1-5 from 3-point range, 6-7 at the line, 17 rebounds (5 O - 12 D), 6 assists, 4 blocks, 4 steals, 9 turnovers committed. SCORING: Mbah a Moute has 9 points and 8 boards, Love has 8, Collison with 7 and Westbrook has 6. Keefe only one with 2 fouls.
    • For Xavier: 11-33 from the floor, 2-9 from beyond the arc, 0-2 at the stripe, 11 rebounds (5 O - 6D), 5 assists, 3 steals, 6 turnovers committed. SCORING: Brown has 10 to lead all scorers, Anderson has 4, Burrell and Raymond have 3, and Lavender has 0 points but 3 assists. Lavender and Duncan have 2 fouls each.
    • ANALYSIS: The Bruins have tried to force the tempo to their speed, with numerous fast break opportunities, but at times they have looked scattered and out-of-control. The Musketeers have kept it close despite only shooting 33% from the field, and will need to do a better job of knocking down open looks, being patient, and hitting the offensive glass if they want to stay with the Bruins.

First Half

  • 0:00: Half ends
  • 0:03: UCLA leads 33-24 - Collison nails a foul line extended jumper
  • 1:15: Xavier trails 31-24 - Brown with a SLAM dunk - off the alley-oop feed from Burrell - Xavier not backing away at all
  • 1:35: TIMEOUT - Xavier
  • 1:38: UCLA leads 31-22 - Mbah a Moute on the put-back of a missed trey
  • 2:08: UCLA leads 29-22 - Mbah a Moute makes both free throws
  • 2:34: Xavier trails 27-22 - Pick-and-roll leads to a SLAM dunk by Brown from Lavender
  • 2:51: UCLA leads 27-20 - Mbah a Moute makes 1 of 2
  • 3:06: Duncan misses front end of 1-and-1
  • 3:06: TV TIMEOUT - I've had the chance to see many Bruins games this season, and this is a typical start - in that the score is close, and it's hard to tell whether they are the superior team and playing down to the opponents level, or whether Xavier is playing above their head and keeping it close. UCLA tends to go through spurts of games where they stagnate.
  • 3:24: UCLA leads 26-20 - Westbrook hits the lay-up off another steal in middle of the floor
  • 3:58: TIMEOUT - UCLA - Seems like a mostly pro-Bruins crowd, and they have been upset over the last few calls, or "non-calls" by the officials, but the Bruins have been out-of-control on the last few opportunities, and I like the fact that the refs are letting the ticky-tack stuff go.
  • 4:00: Xavier trails 24-20 - Burrell with a 3-ball in the side pocket
  • 4:40: UCLA leads 24-17 - Love fakes the 3 and then runs in and hits 14-foot jumper
  • 5:02: UCLA leads 22-17 - K. Love on another put back basket at the offensive end
  • 5:41: Xavier trails 20-17 - Anderson scores on the lay-up - Great cut to the basket and nice pass by Duncan
  • 6:02: Last minute has seen great action at both ends, but UCLA controlling defensive boards, Collison just called for charge at other end
  • 7:09: UCLA leads 20-15 - K. Love on turnaround jumper
  • 7:38: TV TIMEOUT - STAT PACK: For UCLA: 7-14 from the floor, 1-4 from beyond-the-arc, 3-3 at line, 6 rebounds (all defensive), 1 block, 5 assists, 5 turnovers. Collison has 5 points, 4 each for Westbrook and Mbah a Moute. For Xavier: 7-20 from the field, 1-5 from 3-point range, 0-2 at line, 10 rebounds (5-5), 2 assists, 4 turnovers. Brown has 6 points, 3 for Raymond.
  • 8:48: UCLA leads 18-15 - Collison scores on a driving lay-in
  • 9:21: Xavier trails 16-15 - J. Love from Lavender inside jumper
  • 10:46: TV TIMEOUT - Xavier will need to show patience because UCLA loves to run the fast break - maybe the best fast break team in the country - especially when Kevin Love is on the floor to kick start the break with outlet passes. He may be the best at outlet passes to start the break I've seen since Ed Pickney at Villanova in the 1980's. Xavier also needs to knock down open looks when they get them as well.
  • 10:59: Xavier trails 16-13 - Brown on a put back shot
  • 11:56: UCLA leads 16-11 - Mbah a Moute off a great feed inside by Westbrook
  • 12:17: Shot clock violation on UCLA
  • 13:05: Intentional foul on Keefe - Brown misses both technical foul shots
  • 13:24: After a scramble on the floor - Xavier trails 14-11 - Raymond hits the trifecta
  • 13:54: UCLA leads 14-8 - Love hits 2 free throws
  • 14:35: Xavier trails 12-8 - Duncan hits the running jumper
  • 14:48: UCLA leads 12-6 - Collison 3-ball corner pocket
  • 15:29: UCLA leads 9-6 - Mbah a Moute on a 15-foot jumper
  • 15:55: TV TIMEOUT off a shot clock violation on Xavier - Xavier not blinking in first 5 minutes, attacking the basket with reckless disregard.
  • 16:51: Xavier trails 7-6 - Anderson on a floater in the lane
  • 17:04: UCLA leads 7-4 - Shipp driving lay-up and draws foul - makes bonus
  • 17:30: Xavier ties it at 4-4 - Brown with another SLAM DUNK
  • 18:03: UCLA leads 4-2 - Westbrook off the feed from Mbah a Moute
  • 18:19: Xavier ties it at 2-2 - Brown SLAMS home 3rd shot
  • 19:09: UCLA leads 2-0 - Westbrook makes steal and goes all the way for the SLAM DUNK
  • Opening tip goes to... UCLA
  • Awaiting opening tip-off - UCLA looking for its 3rd straight Final Four appearance - Xavier looking for its first ever
