The Washington Mystics is a professional women's basketball team that plays in the Eastern Conference of the WNBA. They joined the WNBA in 1998 and have not yet reached or won the league championships.

Team Background
Following the founding of the WNBA in 1996, Detroit and Washington were granted the first two expansion teams in 1998. The Mystics played their first season in the league in 1998, finishing in last place. They won only three of their 30 games their inaugural season. In 2000, they made their first post season appearance, losing in the first round to the New York Liberty. In their second playoff appearance in 2002, they defeated the Charlotte Sting in the first round, but fell in the conference finals, again to the Liberty.
