Named after the first American president, George Washington, Washington, DC is home to the White House and is the capital of the United States. Home to all three branches of the U.S. government, legislative, executive, and judicial, Washington DC is located on the banks of the Potomac River and bordered by Virginia and Maryland.

History

The area now known as the District of Columbia was agreed upon at a dinner between James Madison and Alexander Hamilton, hosted by Thomas Jefferson. Founded in 1790, Pierre Charles L’Enfant, a French-born architect and engineer, drew plans for Washington, D.C. in 1791. The cornerstone for the White House was laid in 1792, but was burned and gutted in 1814 along with the U.S. Capital, when the British forces attacked.

Washington DC is home to the three time Superbowl champions NFL's Redskins. Also home to the NHL's Washington Capitals, NBA's Washington Wizards, MLB's Washington Nationals and the WNBA's Washington Mystics.
