Vue
Vue is one of the most popular software programs for creating 3D landscapes. It's made by E-On Software and has been used in motion pictures and corporations around the world to make images and animations. It has a very intuitive interface, and tons of features, making it a prime choice for artists and designers.

Features
Some of the features include modeling, ray tracing, plant creation, atmospheres, radiosity, wind, sub-surface scattering, EcoSystems, and all kind of lighting options. The software also comes with import/export options for most other 3D software, and direct Poser integration.
EcoSystems
The EcoSystems engine is one of the most well known feature of Vue. It allows objects such as plants, rocks or any imported model to be duplicated and spread along a terrain in a very efficient way. Vue can then create hundreds or thousands of similar objects with no hit to performance, even if the end product has millions of polygons. This makes the creation of large landscapes very easy.
