Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, better known as Virginia Tech, is a public institution, and is located in Blacksburg, Virginia. It has the largest full time student population in Virginia. The university gained worldwide attention on April 16, 2007, when 32 people were killed in the worst mass shooting in United States history.¹

Virginia Tech opened in 1872 as a Military college, and is still one of six senior military colleges in the United States. They currently offer 80 different bachelor's degree programs through 8 different schools. As well as the military development curriculum, Virginia Tech is also well-respected as an architectural and landscaping school. In 2007, DesignIntelligence ranked Virginia Tech 1st in the nation among both private and public schools.² The athletic department has also been a source of pride for Virginia Tech, particularly the football program. Under the direction of Frank Beamer since 1987, the program has played 15 consecutive bowl games and produced two first-overall selections in the NFL Draft.

Resilient Hokie Spirit

The world found out the courage and spirit of community that exists within the Virginia Tech community in the days following the April 16, 2007 campus shooting that killed 32 people. While the school continues to grieve the losses suffered that day, they also continue to foster a unity of purpose to overcome the events of that faithful day. The incident led to colleges across the world to re-examine their on-campus security and communication systems to prevent future attacks from taking place.
