The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, commonly referred to as UNC Charlotte, is a coeducational public university. The Charlotte 49ers are part of the Atlantic 10 Conference.

Philip L. Dubois became UNCC's chancellor in 2005. Before coming to Charlotte he'd served an eight-year stint as president of the University of Wyoming.

• 1946: Founded as the Charlotte Center
• 1949: Changed name to Charlotte College
• 1958: Joined North Carolina Community College System
• 1965: Renamed University of North Carolina at Charlotte, joined Consolidated University of North Carolina
• 1969: Began offering master’s degree programs
• 1972: Consolidated University of North Carolina became University of North Carolina system
