University of Mississippi Debate
The first presidential debate between candidates Barack Obama and John McCain focused on issues of foreign policy, as planned, but strayed occasionally onto energy policy, taxes, spending and the current financial crisis. The debate was held on September 26, 2008, at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Mississippi and was moderated by PBS anchor Jim Lehrer.

Bailout Fallout
In the midst of Congressional debate over the Mortgage Bailout Plan, John McCain proposed that the first presidential debate be postponed so that he could go to Washington and join the Senate debate, but both Barack Obama and the Commission on Presidential Debates issued statements asserting that the debate should go forward as scheduled.5 McCain attended as was originally expected.
