University of Massachusetts is a five-campus public university within the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' university system. The flagship campus is located on a 1,450-acre campus in Amherst, Massachusetts, 90 miles from Boston and 175 miles from New York City. History
Established in 1863 as the Massachusetts Agricultural College in Amherst, it became known as the Massachusetts State College in 1932. In 1947 the name again changed to the University of Massachusetts. The Worcester campus was established in 1962, with the Boston campus following in 1964. The Lowell campus, previously the University of Lowell, and Dartmouth campus, previously Southeastern Massachusetts University, were consolidated into the University under Chapter 142 of the acts of 1991.
