There are many different types of ulcers. An ulcer is described as a sore on the skin, eye or mucus membranes. Peptic ulcers are found in the stomach. It used to be believed that stress and spicy foods caused peptic ulcers but researchers have found that it is caused by bacteria. A peptic ulcer left untreated may start bleeding.

Lower Extremity Ulcers

Ulcers that occur on the leg or foot may or may not be painful. The three most common types are venous stasis ulcers, which are usually located below the knee on the inner part of the leg just above the ankle. The second type is arterial ulcers, which are usually located on the feet and the third type is neurotrophic ulcers, which are located at the pressure points on the bottom of the feet. Neurotrophic ulcers occur primarily in people with diabetes.
