U.S. Department of Labor

The U.S. Department of Labor (DoL) is a Cabinet-level division of the Federal Government. Its principal duties are to gather economic statistics and to establish standards for wages, work hours and occupational safety. The DoL also provides unemployment insurance, re-employment services, and enforces 180 different labor laws.

Early History

The Department of Labor originated from the Bureau of Labor, established in 1884 under President Chester A. Arthur. On February 14, 1903, Theodore Roosevelt expanded the Bureau of Labor's duties and renamed the Department of Commerce and Labor. The Department of Labor became its own independent Cabinet agency on March 4, 1913. President William H. Taft signed the legislation to do so on his very last day in office.
