The Turkish Van is an ancient, naturally occurring breed of domestic cat from a region that includes Lake Van, in and around present day Turkey. Though Vans are reputed to be exceptionally sweet and intelligent, they're famous for one particular trait, rare to cats: a love for water. In its native region, the breed is often called "The Swimming Cat," due to its attraction to water, as well as the swimming ability displayed by some members of the breed. The Van's coat is also distinct: with patches of color typically confined to the crown and tail, and a fine texture that's said to be water-proof. Though known for centuries in its home region, the Turkish Van is relatively new to feline enthusiasts in America.
