Tracy LaGondino

Thomas Beatie, born Tracy LaGondino, is a transgendered man who reported, in a March 26, 2008 article he wrote for the bi-weekly LGBT magazine, The Advocate, that he was pregnant.¹ On July 3, 2008, Beatie gave birth to a little girl.²

Sex Reassignment

Beatie lived as Tracy LaGondino for 24 years in Hawaii. While there, he began hormone treatments and had surgery to remove his breasts, leaving his female reproductive organs intact.¹ Beatie attributed his decision to become legally designated as male to the fact that Hawaii does not recognize same-sex marriages.

Pregnancy

Beatie reported that he and his wife wanted to have a child together, but after a hysterectomy, his wife was unable to conceive.¹ They decided that Beatie should carry the baby. Beatie was able to get pregnant using an at-home insemination kit.

Hoax Claims

Suspicions of a hoax have been raised, with Beatie's neighbors commenting that he does not appear to be pregnant. On April 3, Beatie was featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show for his first television interview. A segment featured Beatie at an ultrasound appointment, adding evidence to his claim.³

Beatie gave birth July 3, 2008, to a baby girl. It was reported he was going in for a C-Section the birth was natural.²
