On March 21, 2008, the retired Air Force general and co-chair of Barack Obama's presidential campaign, Tony McPeak, compared former president Bill Clinton to Joe McCarthy, the notorious Republican senator from Wisconsin who falsely accused political enemies of Communist sympathies during the 1950s.

According to The New York Times, McPeak told reporters, "I was going to college when Joe McCarthy was accusing good Americans of being traitors, so I've had enough of it." McPeak's comment followed a prior one by Bill Clinton in which he appeared to question Obama's patriotism.
