Guide Note
Tonsillitis occurs when the tonsils become infected with a virus or bacterium that causes them to become red, swollen and painful. In most cases, tonsillitis is caused by a virus, so antibiotics cannot be used to treat it. Reoccurring tonsillitis used to be treated by removing the tonsils, but a tonsillectomy is no longer recommended unless other treatments fail to work.1

Treatment
If the tonsillitis is caused by the bacteria that causes strep throat, antibiotics will be prescribed. However, if the tonsillitis is caused by a virus, it will usually go away on its own. The goal of treatment is to treat the uncomfortable symptoms of tonsillitis. Taking over-the-counter pain relievers will help ease the pain. Also, gargling with salt water and drinking warm tea and broths can be helpful.3
