Tomatoes

Guide Note

Tomatoes are a native fruit of the Americas and remain one of the most popular garden fruits for sandwiches and salads. Though originating in South America, there is little evidence that tomatoes were cultivated for edible use until the Spanish conquest of the area in the 15th and 16th centuries.

There are dozens of commonly grown tomatoes, the most popular of which include Brandywine, Roma, and Black Cherry.

Fruit/Vegetable Controversy

Much discussion persists about the botanical definition of the tomato. Based on its seeds and method of cultivation, it is a fruit. However, many consider it a vegetable due to the frequent mixture of tomatoes in vegetable dishes.
